Cyclers of Seoul QnA - May 2, 2016

‪#‎scCyclersOfSeoul‬

For this week's Cyclers of Seoul QnA, we met up with Haewon .
_
_
Q: Where are you from and how long have you been in Seoul?
-
A: I am from Korea and I have been in Seoul around 8 to 9 years.
=
Q: What bicycle do you ride? (brand, model, style)
-
A: I ride a Giant SCR 2 ROAD. It is my third bike and I recently purchased it last month. In this year, I plan to participant in one triathlon. But I am not sure if I join it or not.
=
Q: What is the best thing about Seoul?
-
A: I think that the best thing about Seoul is being able to meet people from various careers and cultures. There are also lots experiences such as historic sites, landmarks, parks and sports to play and more . As you know or not, there are many good food to eat, shopping, and city tours. And I also recommend that you try to get sports experiences in Seoul like cycling, hiking, windsurfing and etc.
=
Q: Where is the best place to ride?
-
A: Good and hard question to answer. Because there are lots of beautiful riding courses in Seoul and all over Korea. So I would like to recommend two places.
*
1 - The first course is in Seoul and it is called by palace tour. You can start from Jungnangcheon to Namdaemoon Market. You are able to see Korean traditional culture with your bike.
2 - The second place is the Seomjinggang Bicycle Road. It consists of 5 courses (around 154 kilometers). If you visit there, I recommend you plan to stay there 3 or 4 days because there are very good places for you to see on your bicycle and also great hiking tours.
=
Q: Anything else you would like to share?
-
A: Long time ago, I went on bicycle trip with friends from Seoul to Jeju island. I remember that we traveled for 10 days. At that time, we slept in empty classrooms, tent and a staff lounge of neighborhood patrol to cut down on expenses and also cooked by ourselves.

And I recommend you participate in some competition for fun such as a Triathlon, GrandFondo or bicycle festivals. After you complete, you feel very cool and it will remain in your memory. I also would like to travel to other countries and join some kind of event abroad. That is my goal in near future. Any recommendation is welcomed! Thank you! Good luck to all.

Seoul Cycle FYi - Ride safe

‪#‎SeoulCycleFYi‬

It's getting warmer and you'll see more friends and couples riding tandem bikes together. Please be careful when passing them, as many of them are preoccupied taking pictures, laughing, talking etc...which all lead to them sometimes using up the whole lane and wobbling back and forth.

And if you see them looking alike, you're not seeing double. In Korea it's very fashionable to wear matching, couples' clothing to show that you're a couple and an item.

Keep in mind people of all ages with all types of different bicycles might not be paying attention and might cut you off at anytime. Ride smart...ride safe.

The main spots to ride slower are:
- Yeoido
- Bampo
- Apgujeong
- Jamsil
- Gwangnaru
- Ttukseom

Seoul Cycle Video - Namsan Tower - Spring Time

‪#‎SeoulCycleVideo‬

Here is a video cycling up and down Namsan shot on April 12, 2016. There were lots of fluffy cherry blossoms. It made it for a very beautiful ride...minus the buses (better early morning, late afternoon or at nighttime...less buses)

Namsan mountain during spring. The cherry blossoms are almost finished. On top of Namsan, you can find a giant tower (also nice at nighttime) with restaurants, cafe, convenient store, pagodas and also great views of the city. Be careful when you ride this road, as you can see there are buses that you need to share the road with.

Cyclers of Seoul - April 18, 2016

‪#‎scCyclersOfSeoul‬

Seoul Cycle is starting a weekly Monday release of Cyclers of Seoul. Where we have a short QnA with people who ride their bicycle in Seoul.

So stay tuned every Monday for our Cyclers of Seoul. And here is Nicky from U.S.A. to kick it off
-

Q: How long have you been in Seoul?
-

A: I am in Seoul for only 10 days but I plan on coming back sometime this summer to do more cycling. There seems to be lots of great trails to ride and I also want to the Seoul to Busan.
=
Q: Your ride?
-
A: I ride a Single Speed Jamis Sputnik. It is my old bike from when I used to be a bike messenger in New York and I use it for travelling around too. But while in Seoul, I am riding my friend’s Giant.
=
Q: Best thing about Seoul?
-
A: Meeting people, awesome food, and rich history. My friends in Seoul have shown me many great places to go out and I love the night seen here. People are always up for fun and know how to have fun. I’ve been to many places around the world and I really like it here. I plan on coming back and having a longer vacation here.
=
Q: Best place to ride?
-
A: So far, I’ve only ridden on parts of the Han river. But it was great, well organized and you can see many things along the river path. The Yeoido Cascading Falls was a cool place to stop and take some photos.
=
Q: You mentioned that you did some touring on your single speed, how was it?
-

A: It was amazing. In 2012 I biked across Europe over a 6 months period covering over 7,000 kilometers. I biked the whole continent starting in Instanbul and ending in Spain. I used my single speed with carbon fiber aerospoke wheels.I love the low maintenance of the single speed and it was a great ride. I only got a few flats and changed my chain once. I mostly used couchsurfers for lodging. Then in 2013 I rode around Iceland for 3 weeks and mostly camped out in my tent. I have lots of pictures and videos of my trips.

Check out my transcontinental European video at Bike2012.nickypallas.com
